Skills Seminar

Wednesday 9th July 2008. Wynyard room, Tees Valley

The seminar was run in partnership by the North East Economic Forum, in
conjunction with the Science and Industry Council, North East.

The need for trained staff in the region has never been more apparent. We are seeing growing demand for skills, as the region develops increasingly technically demanding industries. There exists a wealth of support for businesses and individuals that are developing their own skills or those of their workforce. However, businesses are finding it difficult to access this support.

The half day event provided opportunities for businesses to gather advice from other organisations which have successfully accessed the available support, and have developed meaningful business outcomes in the form of training and improved skills. Representatives of organisations who attended the event acquired new, practical knowledge that will help them develop their own activities.

The workshops focused on four themes which businesses have identified as most important to them. Each workshop will include case study examples from actual businesses that have taken forward activities in these areas, and question and answers.

Individual workshops were held on each of these themes:

Apprenticeships:

The workshop here will describe how apprenticeship programmes have been developed, who has been involved in the management and development, and what support was obtained.

Train to Gain:

The workshop here will explain this programme, give examples of how businesses have accessed this programme and describe their experiences.

Graduates:

The workshop here will identify how businesses have identified sources of graduates, recruited these, developed the individuals, and accessed support.

How businesses explain their needs to providers:

The workshop here will explain how businesses have identified their skill needs, as individual businesses and with others, how they have communicated these needs to training.
